Areia Branca, which is a 10 minute drive up the coast, is a lively beach resort with bars, cafes and good surfing beaches. You can hire boards and wetsuits and arrange surf lessons from the various companies who have shops along the beach front.
Peniche, about a 30 minute drive north, is famous for its surfing and watersports in general. The beaches are long with good, clean, white sand. There are plenty of surf schools and equipment hire shops.

Peniche is also the place to catch a boat out to the Berlengas Islands , a marine reserve (classified by the Council of Europe as a "Biosphere Reserve"). The archipelago consists of a large island, Berlenga Grande, and some small granite islands and rocks (Estelas and Farilhões), which are situated some 7 miles off the headland of Cabo Carvoeiro to the north-west of Peniche. Boats leave from Peniche harbour and the journey takes roughly 30 minutes to reach Berlenga Grande. You can return in the evening or spend the night at the fortress. There is also a restaurant on the island. The small beaches and beautiful clear waters makes it an ideal place for swimming and diving.
